Reducing unregulated mining and illicit financial flows in Ghana

In Ghana, TAG works with national and local government, major industrial mining corporations and communities to reduce the incentives for illegal mining. Our goal is to draw increasing amounts of the country’s massive gold exports through legal channels, cutting off a major source of criminal and extremist funding.

Through sustained policy advocacy and community engagement, the UK-Ghana Gold Programme has supported the establishment of Gold Trader Associations in the Bole and Ashanti regions, helping over 30 small mining company applications to the Office of the Registrar of Companies. Embedded assistance to the Economic and Organised Crime Office has seen the review of multiple gold-related investigations, enabled by a bespoke fintech system for identifying and tracking anomalous transactions.

Though UK-GGP, TAG is helping to counter an illicit trade that costs Ghana billions of dollars in lost revenue, and to stem the flow of illegal income to organised crime groups working across the region and worldwide.
